Upcoming event: 'King Lear' broadcast at Rialto

A taped broadcast of ‘King Lear‘ will be shown at Rialto Theatre (Limassol) later this month.

The event date is January 21st. It is scheduled to start at 20:00 and finish at 23:00.

From the event organizers:

“Broadcast from London’s West End, see Ian McKellen’s ‘extraordinarily moving portrayal’ (Independent) of King Lear at Rialto Theatre.

Chichester Festival Theatre’s production received five-star reviews for its sell-out run, and transfers to the West End for a limited season. Jonathan Munby directs this contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play.

Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a King, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.”

The full premise of the film is described as such:

“King Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It tells the tale of a king who bequeaths his power and land to two of his three daughters, after they declare their love for him in an extremely fawning and obsequious manner.

His third daughter gets nothing, because she will not flatter him as her sisters had done. When he feels disrespected by the two daughters who now have his wealth and power, he becomes furious to the point of madness. He eventually becomes tenderly reconciled to his third daughter, just before tragedy strikes her and then the king.”
