New commander of National Guard takes over at a decisive time, says President Anastasiades

The new commander of the National Guard takes over at a decisive time for both the reform of the Force and for the country as a whole, said on Wednesday President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades. At the same time, new commander Lieutenant General Democretos Zervakis assured that he will do his utmost to continue the work of the National Guard.

In his address at the swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Palace Anastasiades told the new commander he is called to protect and defend “our occupied homeland”.

He praised the new commander for his excellent knowledge and training as well as long and distinguished service at the Greek Armed forces and EU and UN missions.

President Anastasiades paid tribute to the former commander and thanked him for his role during the reform of the National Guard.

“Your tenure coincides with a decisive period for our country and the ongoing integrated reform plan of the National Guard, which requires increased oversight and hard work,” the President remarked.

He said, “I have no doubt that you will respond to the high expectations of your mission” and assured he will support the new commander’s work.

On his part, Lieutenant General Zervakis assured he will do his utmost to continue the work of the National Guard, noting he is fully aware of the high honour and responsibility he has undertaken towards the people of Cyprus and especially at a time of great challenges.

I will use all my strength, he noted, “so that with the guidance and cooperation of the political leadership, the help of my staff and with consistency towards the work of my predecessors, the high operational readiness of the National Guard and its upgrading will be further enhanced.”
