Meteorology Department Issues Yellow Warning

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning which is valid from 22:00 December 23 until 16:00 Tuesday afternoon.

According to the forecast, rain at times and isolated thunderstorms are expected to affect the area. The total rain accumulation is locally likely to exceed 50 millimeters in a 6 hour period.

Moreover strong to near gale southwesterly winds with a mean speed of 6 to 7 Beaufort are also expected.

Citizens are advised to be aware of the possibility of flooding of a small number of properties, with local disruption to outdoor activities. Difficult driving conditions due to reduced visibility and aquaplaning are also expected.

Driving In The Rain: Useful Tips

  • if time allows, wait until the weather improves before starting your drive

  • make sure your car doesn’t have any mechanical faults, including tire damage

  • drive a little slower than usual, especially if you’re driving on the highway

  • turn on your headlights, make yourself visible to other drivers

  • turn on your windshield wipers, back and front if possible

  • if possible, allow some more space between yourself and the car in front of you

  • try to avoid sharp and heavy braking, aim for a smoother application of the brakes

  • be mindful of pooled water, this can cause hydroplaning 

  • if you have the misfortune of hydroplaning, lift your foot from the gas pedal

  • turn on the hot or cold ventilation in your car to remove humidity and increase visibility
