House Speaker Demertris Syllouris on Monday began his official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with a meeting with the Speaker of the Federal National Council, FNC, Saqr Ghobash.
A statement issued by the Cyprus Parliament says that during the meeting the two sides reaffirmed the very good relations between Cyprus and the UAE in all areas and the mutual will to further deepen and enhance them, especially at the parliamentary level. Both sides agreed to set up Friendship Groups at Parliament which will promote the exchanges of bilateral visits. Syllouris extended an invitation to Gobash to visit Cyprus which was accepted.

The Speaker briefed the UAE official on his initiatives regarding the promotion of Arabophone in Cyprus and the set up of a Middle East Cooperation Center, as well as his intention to develop relations between the two countries in the fields of e-government, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence. Gobash expressed a keen interest in assisting in the collective effort to promote and implement these initiatives.
The House Speaker was also received by the Crown Prince of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The meeting took place within the framework of a gathering of the Emirati family and other Emirati officials. The Sheikh and Cyprus House Speaker discussed ways to promote bilateral cooperation.
Syllouris, according to the press release by the House, also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates , Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. During the meeting, the two men spoke of the friendly relations between the two countries and exchanged ideas on how these relations could be further enhanced.
The Minister referred to the role Cyprus could play as a gateway for the UAE to develop their relations with the Balkans and Europe. He added that UAE could also be the gate for cooperation between Cyprus and the Middle East as well as Cyprus and Asia.
