Cyprus' effort to highlight its role in Southeast Mediterranean region, Defence Minister says

Cyprus is constantly trying to highlight the role it can play in the area of Southeast Mediterranean, Defense Minister Savvas Angelides said on Monday in his statements following today’s exercise of the National Guard carried out in collaboration with the French aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle.

“Cyprus is constantly trying to highlight the role it can play in the area of Southeast Mediterranean.”

Cypriot Minister said that more joint exercises between Cyprus and France would be taking place in the future relating to air defense, aviation, and navy aiming to upgrade the National Guard.

He said that today’s first phase of the joint exercise with France aimed at attacking virtual targets by activating Cyprus’ air defence system. The virtual targets were attacked by Rafale aircraft operating from the French aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, he added.

“Joint exercises between Cyprus and France would be taking place in the future relating to air defense, aviation, and navy aiming to upgrade the National Guard.”

Minister expressed his satisfaction with the results of the exercise so far.

He also said that today’s exercise is a concrete example of the close cooperation between Cyprus and France at the military level.

He said that such exercises provide high-level training to National Guard personnel, noting that “it really seems like we are at a high level. ”

Asked whether during the visit tomorrow of French Defence Minister they will also discuss the issue of further cooperation between the two countries in the field of security and defence, Minister said that “we will be given the opportunity to exchange views on risk assessment in the region and set further actions on this cooperation.”
