Four new cases of Coronavirus were confirmed on Wednesday in Cyprus, bringing the total to six. A Ministry of Health press release said that according to the Institute of Neurology and Genetics, four new cases of Corona virus were confirmed. Two persons who arrived from the United Kingdom last night had high fever detected during the temperature check at arrivals. They were taken to Nicosia General Hospital for treatment at a specially designated ward. A third person was hospitalized yesterday at the specially designated ward of Limassol General Hospital, after contacting the authorities following high fever. A fourth person is confined home after developing symptoms and had contacted the authorities. Already the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health has started locating the contacts of the four new cases and will take samples for testing. Earlier Wednesday, Christina Christodoulou, Director of the Institute’s Molecular Virology Department said approximately 80 to 100 samples are currently being tested for COVID-19 at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, while the tests for 152 people who came to contact with a 64-year-old doctor who has been found positive to the virus will be repeated. Christodoulou said that citizens must behave responsibly particularly as regards the vulnerable groups of the population so that the number of cases remains low. Asked if the 152 cases that were tested negative and concern people who came to contact with the doctor who was tested positive will be re-examined, Christodoulou said that there are criteria for monitoring the cases and that the competent services will take samples for the second time for the people who came to direct contact with a confirmed case. Meanwhile Executive Medical Director of the Institute Leonidas Phylactou, who is also co-chair of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Health, said that they are in contact with their Turkish Cypriot counterparts daily in the framework of the Committee’s work.
